UTF-8 converter

Encode text as UTF-8 bytes, decode a hexadecimal byte sequence as UTF-8, or convert a text file from a source encoding you already know. The controls on this page process your input in the browser; they do not upload it.

Text to UTF-8 bytes

Enter text to see its UTF-8 bytes in hexadecimal. Bytes are separated by spaces for readability.

The example is ready to encode.

Hexadecimal bytes to text

Paste UTF-8 bytes as pairs such as 47 72 C3 BC. Spaces, commas, colons, and optional 0x prefixes are accepted. Invalid or incomplete UTF-8 is reported instead of silently replaced.

Convert a local text file to UTF-8

Select a plain-text file and choose the encoding in which its bytes were saved. The tool cannot reliably guess an encoding. It creates a UTF-8 download without sending the file to a server. Use a backup, and do not use this for binary files.

Choose a text file and its known source encoding.

Want to see what each part of a string means? Use the UTF-8 byte inspector, which lists code points and bytes side by side.
